# WP Markdown

WP Markdown is a WordPress plugin that serves a clean Markdown copy of every page at the same URL with `.md` on the end, so ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and AI agents read your content, not your theme.

`/blog/hello/` also answers at `/blog/hello.md`.

On a real WordPress article, the HTML page was 152,958 bytes and its Markdown copy was 1,719 bytes: 89 times smaller, with the same headings, steps, table and links.

## How it works

1. Activate the plugin and paste your licence key. It runs on WordPress 6.0+ and PHP 8.0+, on any host.
2. Add `.md` to any URL. Posts, pages and custom post types, at any depth.
3. AI reads the clean copy. The first request builds and saves it; editing the post rebuilds it.

## Features

- **Any theme, any builder:** it renders the page and strips the header, menus, sidebar, comments and share buttons. Elementor, ACF fields and shortcodes come through.

## FAQ

### My WordPress site fails the Markdown check on isitagentready.com. How do I fix it?

Install WP Markdown and activate your key, then scan a post or page again. isitagentready.com asks the page for Markdown with `Accept: text/markdown`; with the plugin, the same address answers with `content-type: text/markdown`, and every page names its `.md` copy in a `Link` header, which its discoverability check also looks for.

### Will a Markdown copy hurt my SEO?

No. Every copy sends `Link: <your page>; rel="canonical"`, which tells search engines the HTML page is the original. Google keeps ranking the page your visitors see.

### Do I need to set anything up?

Only your licence key. Activate the plugin, paste the key, and every published post and page answers at its URL plus `.md`. Developers can change the behaviour with filters if they want to.

### Does it work with my theme or page builder?

It reads the rendered page, the same HTML your visitors get, so it works with block themes, classic themes, Elementor, ACF fields and shortcodes. It finds the main content and drops the header, menus, sidebar, footer, comments and share buttons.

### Can it expose drafts or members-only content?

No. Only published, public content gets a copy. Drafts, private and scheduled posts return 404 and password-protected posts return 401. A page built for a logged-in user is never saved, so one member's view can't reach anyone else.

### Will it slow my site down?

No. Your normal pages are untouched. A copy is built once, the first time it is requested, then served from a saved file until you edit the post.

### How do AI tools find the .md copies?

Every page names its `.md` copy in a `Link` header and in a link tag in its head. An agent that sends `Accept: text/markdown` gets the copy at the page's own address, and every internal link inside a copy points to another copy. An `llms.txt` index that lists them all is the next feature on the list.

### What do I need to run it?

WordPress 6.0 or newer and PHP 8.0 or newer. It installs from a regular zip, with no Composer step.
